Studio Schedule
Studio Pedagogy
SITREP.at LISBON Summer 2017 is an intensive, on-site design studio, which aims to develop innovative design methodologies for explicitly engaging the “Urbanity,” or the latent software, of cities through the case-study of transforming the Doca de Santos on the Lisbon waterfront into a Civic Forum. The studio pedagogy is founded upon the:
CREATION of a novel set of data by collecting and analyzing the “soft”, latent information underlying the changing conditions, user-ship, and programmatic malleability of selected plazas in Lisbon.
IDENTIFICATION of the data’s associated architectural and urbanity devices, especially as they pertain to the potential to expand both the porosity (hardware) and accessibility (software) of informational-social complexes such as Lisbon’s public plazas.
DEVELOPMENT of design proposals incorporating the above data set and devices to transform the selected public plazas into Civic Forums.
SITREP.at LISBON 2017 will be hosted by the Centro de Informação Urbana de Lisboa and the Lisbon Municipality (CIUL-CML), using the Doca de Santos on the Lisbon waterfront as a case-study, in conjunction with the Instituto Superior das Ciências do Trabalho e da Empresa-Instituto Universitário de Lisboa (ISCTE-IUL). Instruction will be conducted by Professors Carla Leitão, Philippe Baumann, and Michael Su, together with lecture and seminar collaborations of staff from the CIUL-CML and faculty from the ISCTE-IUL.
6 European University Credits (ECTS) will be available for this design studio, which may be transferred to your local institution. As well, credits/units/points towards country-specific, professional licensure programs may be available (application pending).
STRUCTURE
This studio operates as a research and design course, in that Instructors establish specific topics for study and then work closely with small teams of studio participants to conduct research and design exercises in order to develop design proposals. The studio structure consists of:
- Keynote lecture on Lisbon by special guest.
- Daily topical lectures by Lisbon experts and studio instructors.
- Studio reviews on research and design with studio instructors.
- Skills/techniques/software instruction in seminars and workshops.
- Autonomous, open studio hours for readings, field work, and research/design exercises.
- Public Review and Exhibition of studio work.
- Site and Office Visits.
COMPONENTS
The first week of the studio consists of daily lectures and research exercises, while the second week is dedicated to developing context- and problem-specific proposals to create a Civic Forum in Lisbon at the Doca de Santos. These proposals will then be presented at a public Design Review and Exhibition, and eventaully incorporated into a Situation Report.
The on-site design studio components:
- Daily, dedicated work space at the CIUL – Centro de Informação Urbana de Lisboa.
- On-site studio coordinators and assistants.
- Keynote lecture by a special guest.
- Daily lectures by experts and professors.
- Seminars on specific skills and techniques.
- Open studio days for in-house work.
- Final public review and exhibition.
- Co-authorship in resulting Situation Report.
- Academic recommendations and professional networking.
- Portfolio of work produced during the studio.
- 6 ECTS European University Credits, which may be transferred to your local institution.
- Credits/units/points towards country-specific, professional licensure programs (application pending).
Studio Collaborators
Detailed list of Keynote Lecturer, Lecturers, Seminar Speakers, and Workshop Directors will be distributed to participants separately.
This design studio is made possible by the generous hosting and support of:
Studio Location
SITREP.at LISBON Summer 2017 will be held at the CIUL – Centro de Informação Urbana de Lisboa (Center of Urban Information of Lisbon), Picoas Plaza Núcleo 6-E,1º, R. Viriato 13, 1050-233 Lisboa, Portugal.
SITREP.at
SITREP.at operates intensive, on-site Design Studios dedicated to developing methodologies for explicitly engaging the “Urbanity”, or software, of the city.
In contrast to designing the Architecture, or hardware, of cities, designing for Urbanity infers specific design skills and research techniques to account for changing and changeable datasets (consisting of both variables and functions), such as those of time-dependent architectural programs, top-down urban manifests with integrated bottom-up resistance, and patterns of discrete and collective behaviors and preferences. The form and performance of the informational-social complex of public spaces, or forums, comprise just such a dataset. This studio will therefore develop its methodologies through the case study of transforming Lisbon’s public spaces into Civic Forums. We aim to promote these particular skills and techniques:
- Collect and analyze the changing and changeable data of a city, thereby creating datasets consisting of both variables and functions.
- Re-contextualize design problems in terms of urban hardware and software, or Architecture and Urbanity.
- Identify concepts and examples related to the topic, e.g. – GIS, geolocation, spimes (physical-digital objects embodying their own histories), ambient intelligence, ubiquitous computing, augmented reality, virtual reality, cybrid environments, interactive space, multimedia space, the internet of things, and smart materials.
- Analyze and test elements, sites, and design strategies for the potential to expand the permeation and accessibility of informational-social complexes, specifically, those of Lisbon’s public spaces, in order to transform them into Civic Forums.
- Propose architectural and urban design solutions in terms of both their performative and transformational potential towards this end.
SITREP.at LISBOA 2017 : Confere créditos europeus dentro do sistema ECTS.
